It is most important in these troubled times to remember that the battle for democracy and freedom begins here... on the shoproom floor, in the media, in the courtrooms and boardrooms, and, of course, in the streets ... preservation of our rights to freely assemble, to dissent, to speak out, to organize ourselves into unions, to democratically elect our representatives ... the very essence of what it should mean to be an american citizen. It is these basic human rights that we should be exporting ... not land mines, pesticides, weapons and sweatshops. When people around the globe have these basic human rights, no nation will harbor those who intend violence toward others. It's the way to lasting peace.
